Los Angeles has one of the most spread-out Nepali food scenes in the country, from Palms to Pasadena to Long Beach. These seven spots are the ones to start with, whether you want a quick plate of momos or a full thali. All ten of the day's new Los Angeles listings are linked below.
1. Tara's Himalayan Cuisine, Palms
Tara's has been serving the Palms and Culver City area since 2007, with steamed momos and tomato achaar, yak chili, Sherpa stew and thukpa, slow-cooked khasi ko masu and daal bhat masu. It opens at 2 in the afternoon — Sunday to Wednesday until 10, Thursday to Saturday until 11 — and stays closed on Mondays. Find it here: https://meetnepali.com/businesses/taras-himalayan-cuisine-los-angeles and plan around that late opening.
2. MOMO SOULS, Palms
If momos are the whole point of the trip, this is the stop. The menu runs from jhol momo and tandoori momo to kurkure, saag, butter masala, 65, malai and achari momos, plus Himalayan chowmein, and the kitchen is halal certified. It is open daily from 2 to 10 in the afternoon and evening. Details: https://meetnepali.com/businesses/momo-souls-los-angeles — a counter spot that started as a market stall.
3. Himalayan House, Jefferson Park
Near USC, this is the thali stop: chicken, fish, lamb and goat thalis alongside steamed, fried and kothey momos and thukpa soup. Dinner runs 4 to 9:30, Tuesday is closed, and lunch runs 11:30 to 3. Listing: https://meetnepali.com/businesses/himalayan-house-los-angeles with the full hours and menu notes.
4. Tibet Nepal House Restaurant, Pasadena
Serving Pasadena since 2001, this is the classic of the set: veg, chicken, veal and yak momos, thukpa, phing glass-noodle soup and a Nepali set menu. Dinner is 5 to 9 every day, with lunch from 11:30 to 3. See https://meetnepali.com/businesses/tibet-nepal-house-restaurant-pasadena for the details.
5. Himalayan Cafe, Old Pasadena
A short walk from Old Pasadena's main drag, with handcrafted steamed and fried momos, tandoori specialties, garlic naan and mango lassi, plus vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. Hours are Sunday to Thursday 11:30 to 9:30 and Friday to Saturday 11:30 to 10:30. Listing: https://meetnepali.com/businesses/himalayan-cafe-pasadena — not to be confused with the San Dimas cafe of the same name.
6. Mandala Grill & Spice, Long Beach
The Long Beach entry is Indian and Nepalese: chicken momo with house tomato chutney, tandoor-roasted lamb barbecue sekuwa, timmure spaghetti pasta with Szechuan-pepper sauce, and the usual tikka masala and biryani. Open daily 11:30 to 10. Full listing: https://meetnepali.com/businesses/mandala-grill-spice-long-beach for the Long Beach stop.
7. Everest Cuisine, Placentia
Out in Orange County, Everest Cuisine is Indian and Nepalese, with Himalayan chicken momo, vegetable momo, chicken choila and a lunch buffet. Dinner is 5 to 10 daily, lunch 11 to 3. Details at https://meetnepali.com/businesses/everest-cuisine-placentia — the Placentia location, not the other Everest restaurants around the country.
Beyond the plate
Three more new Los Angeles listings are worth knowing even though they are not restaurants: the Shree Pashupatinath temple and cultural centre in Norwalk at https://meetnepali.com/businesses/shree-pashupatinath-and-buddha-mandir-norwalk , the Lucky Money Plus RIA remittance counter in Artesia at https://meetnepali.com/businesses/lucky-money-plus-artesia , and the Nepali-founded Kathmandu Boutique in Santa Monica at https://meetnepali.com/businesses/kathmandu-boutique-santa-monica .
